Ritual of the Yee Naaldlooshil
Yee Naaldlooshil is Navajo for Skinwalker, which is an evil entity in Navajo culture. The Skinwalker is a shapeshifter, and many Navajo are terrified of skinwalkers and believe that even mentioning their existence can bring one into your life. This artwork is made on a round section of wood that is 18 inches in diameter. I decorated the wood with antler, making it about 34 inches in diameter. The Skinwalker is wearing a mask made of genuine leather that is stitched together with sinew. A genuine coyote tail is wrapped around the neck of the Skinwalker, and he is dressed in a leather and buckskin shirt that has a decorative mini breast plate made of glass beads, wooden and bone hair pipes, and buffalo teeth. The Skinwalker ritual requires the offering of a life, usually a sibling or another close family member. I decorated around the Skinwalker with some disturbing imagery. There are two forked antler coming out of the wood, and they each have a section of leather wrapped around them that is stitched into place with sinew. Each forked antler also has a small section of genuine fur attached at the base of the antler. A small burlap sack full of sky blue colored magnesite faux turquoise is resting on top of the forked antler. The opposite forked antler has a fake eyeball resting on it, and fake blood is spattered around the antler. Several strands of horse hair are attached to a chain and dangle from one side of the forked antler, and an arrowhead made from bone dangles on the other forked side of the antler from a strip of leather with glass beads. On the opposite forked antler, another matching bone arrowhead dangles from a strip of leather with glass beads, and a buffalo tooth covered in dark red paint to mimic blood dangles from a strip of leather with glass beads. At the base of each forked antler, a dangling metal arrowhead is attached to a strip of leather with glass beads. There are six feathers attached to strips of leather with glass beads and shaved antler buttons attached at the bottom of the wood circle. This artwork comes equipped with two LED lights located on the back. The eyes of the painting are able to light up, and flicker between yellow and red, mimicking a flame, when the lights are turned on. The lights require batteries, and they are included. The painting is 34 inches in diameter, and has a depth of 10 inches.
